What's new on the Tarka Trail?

A new interpretation board has been installed at Yelland to tell the story of the old power station and there is new safety white lining and signage at Fremington.  Both these projects were possible through external funding. 

Specific sections of the Tarka Trail have been cut back and trees coppiced near Watergate by a firewood contractor to produce local sustainable fuel.  Trail users say "It has made a fantastic difference".

New leaflet - we have worked with North Devon Plus to create a leaflet that gives income to distributors, advertising for local businesses and an income to reinvest in the Trail.  Read more.

'Des Res' for Otters

In April, Tom Hynes from the Biosphere Service helped a team of 6 volunteers build a new otter holt 'des-res' near the River Torridge using wood felled from the nearby Tarka Trail.  Earlier in the month the Service organised a swift box workshop so that people can build and install a box in the eaves of their house to provide nesting sites for this declining species.

James May and Oz Clarke recently returned to North Devon for another attempt at running their miniture trains from Barnstaple to Bideford Station.  This time they were competing against the trio of German brothers who run the Miniature Wunderland, the world's biggest model railway exhibition in Hamburg.  We will have to wait for the program to air before we find out who won!

Biosphere success with nest box building and forest school craft activities as part of the Big Sheep Family Fun Day

Bid submitted

The Service has secured over £18,000 from the Bideford Bridge Trust, Landfill Tax credits and other sources to support the "Life's Journey" project.  The project aims to increase people's physical access to and their understanding of three sites that are linked by the Tarka Trail.  These are Fremington Quay Heritage Centre, Home Farm Marsh Nature Reserve and various sites between Landcross and Furzebeam where remains of the Rolle Canal exist.

An HLF application for the remainder of the required funding (the total cost of the project is c.£70,000) has been submitted. If the application is successful, the Project will begin in August 2011.

Schools Exhibition

35 schools from across the Biosphere will have images displayed at our "Developing a Sense of Place" photography exhibition. The project uses the wonderful Biosphere environment and inspiration from the Beaford Archive to strengthen and deepen young people's understanding of their relationship with where they live. The exhibition will be at Beaford's Greenwarren House between June 10th and 12th and entry is FREE.  Please come if you can and pass on details to people you think might be interested.

Tom Hynes led a successful walk as part of the North Devon Walking Festival this year near Torrington.  This coincided with the Royal Wedding day and many beautiful spring flowers were seen along the route.
