On 5th October the NIA team led a comunitiy walk around Cookbury Poorlands, a four acre woodland beside the village of Cookbury. 15 people attended as were pleased to find that such a wonderful habitat exists on their doorstep and thought that there were opportuniites to do some woodeland management to improve access and habitat diversity.
Cookbury Poorlands which was then a field was left to the church in 1850 for the benefit of the labouring poor and was used by the 'poor of the parish' untl about 35 years ago. Over those years the proportion of worked plots had decreased and woodland became established and now, the entire site is wooded and rich in ferns, mosses and associated life.
Access is by permission of the church.
