The Knowledge and Research working group of the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere Partnership plays a vital role in ensuring that decisions and actions across the Biosphere are grounded in robust evidence, innovation, and shared learning. By fostering collaboration between scientists, local communities, and decision-makers, this group helps to shape a future where nature, people, and enterprise thrive together.

Our aims

•    Support evidence-based decision-making across all Biosphere themes, from nature recovery to sustainable development.
•    Promote interdisciplinary research that addresses local and global challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and social equity.
•    Facilitate knowledge exchange between academic institutions, local authorities, land managers, and community groups.
•    Champion innovation and digital tools that enhance our understanding of the Biosphere and support adaptive management.

Smart Biosphere

The Smart Biosphere initiative harnesses the power of digital technology and data science to monitor and manage the Biosphere more effectively. Using a network of sensors, satellite data, and AI-powered analytics, the project provides real-time insights into environmental conditions, land use, and ecosystem health.
This cutting-edge approach supports:

Shared Outcomes

The North Devon Biosphere is one of three UK UNESCO sites selected to pilot the Shared Outcomes project—an ambitious initiative led by the UK National Commission for UNESCO and funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). This project explores how UNESCO-designated sites can act as testbeds for climate resilience, integrating cultural, ecological, and community values into climate adaptation strategies.
Through Shared Outcomes, the Biosphere is working with local stakeholders to co-develop tools and frameworks that align environmental goals with social and economic wellbeing—ensuring that climate action delivers benefits for all. Find out more.
