Creating the conditions for nature to thrive

The North Devon UNESCO Biosphere is leading a bold and collaborative effort to reverse the decline in biodiversity and restore thriving ecosystems across northern Devon. Through its Nature Recovery Plan, the Biosphere is working with communities, landowners, conservation organisations, and public bodies to create a landscape where wildlife can flourish alongside people and sustainable livelihoods.

This work is grounded in the recognition that we are facing a global ecological emergency. In response, the Biosphere’s Nature thematic group is delivering a locally tailored programme of action that aligns with the UK Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan, the Environment Act 2021, and the national ambition to protect 30% of land and sea for nature by 2030.

A shared vision for nature’s recovery

The Nature Recovery Plan sets out a 2030 vision for a landscape rich in wildlife, where habitats are connected, resilient to climate change, and delivering vital ecosystem services such as clean water, carbon storage, and flood protection. This vision is brought to life through five detailed action plans covering:

• Grassland and Arable
• Wetlands and Waterbodies
• Towns and Villages
• Coast
• Trees, Woodlands and Hedges

Each plan identifies priority actions, lead partners, and opportunities for collaboration and investment. From restoring species-rich grasslands and dynamic coastal wetlands to improving water quality and supporting rare pollinators, the Biosphere is coordinating a landscape-scale approach to nature recovery.

Marine and coastal integration

The Marine Nature Recovery Plan (2022–2027) complements the land-based strategy by focusing on the estuarine and marine environments of the Biosphere. Developed through the Championing Coastal Coordination initiative, it highlights key habitats and species, identifies barriers to recovery, and proposes actions to enhance marine biodiversity and resilience.

Community-powered recovery

At the heart of the Nature Recovery Plan is a commitment to community engagement. The Biosphere encourages individuals, schools, farmers, and organisations to sign the Nature Recovery Declaration, pledging their support for a healthier natural environment. This grassroots movement is helping to build a culture of stewardship and shared responsibility for the landscapes and seascapes of northern Devon.
