Biosphere Energy Plan

Picture
GHG = Green House Gases The UK aims to bring all greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050

The Biosphere Partnership is leading the development of a Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP) for the Biosphere as part of a wider strategy for net zero carbon Biosphere Reserve. We have called it our Biosphere Energy Plan.

The SEAP will look at patterns of energy use and generation, the policy framework  and tools to make the changes required to meet the UK Governement's carbon reduction targets on a Biosphere scale.

Progress to October 2013 has focussed on calculating the energy baseline with the findings summarised in a (currently draft) report. Specific content includes:

  • A calculation of the current energy consumption at the household and per capita level, as well as for the whole Biosphere area
  • A model showing the cost of energy and levels of carbon dioxide emissions have been modelled for the area based on future projections for fuel price and the trickle-down effects of national energy policies based on a scenario where no further action to address fuel price and emissions is taken.
  • For the domestic sector, opportunities for energy reduction and modelled the costs and savings that could be made for suggested packages of measures.
  • A calculation of the current renewable energy capacity in the area.
The SEAP is funded through the European Union's Interreg supported SEACS (Sustainable Energy Across the Common Space) programme
