As part of the national demonstration in Natural Flood Management, we are demonstating how to plan and adapt coastal features to improve flood and coastal defence resilience in North Devon.
Our project has 2 parts;
-the first is modelling the change in sea level and the likely changes in saltmarsh and coastal habitats over the next 80 years, how much freshwater flood storage area will be lost and where/how do we replace these. (this work is done using a hydro-geomorphological computer model from the USA)
-the second is the practical demonstration of using natural features to reduce problems in the estuary now.
Our chosen site is Instow Dunes and beach where the sand is building up on the beach and spilling over on to the road causing hazards to pedestrians and traffic as well as localised flooding. The following documents identify the different options and the resulting method we have chosen, which is based on a similar issue fixed in Swansea Bay.
The documents below are the various elements of the second part of the work and includes the presentations given to the Parish Council and the public in November 2019.
